Rheological properties of Mg2SiO4 glass: a molecular dynamics study

In this article, the mechanical behavior of glass of composition Mg2SiO4 is studied by molecular dynamics. Atomic rearrangements induced under simple shear are highlighted using a non-affine displacement criterion, and we propose a statistical analysis of their occurrences and distributions. We also show that the rheological behavior of glass follows a Herschel-Buckley law modified to take account of temperature effects. This latter quantitative information is important, as it enables us to extrapolate the flow stresses of glass under conditions inaccessible to numerical modeling.
